Western Civilization
Is “Western Civilization” worth fighting for? This concept, as embodied in countries with democratically elected leaders, freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of assembly and protest…is it the best version of human society. Given the choice, would you rather live in one of the “Western” nations of North America and Europe, or would you choose a more authoritarian nation, such as China or Russia. Perhaps you would prefer a Middle Eastern Sultanate or Theocracy. Perhaps Saudi Arabia or Iran, respectively.
If Western Civilization seems the best answer for you, how far should we got to defend it? What makes the other choices less desirable? When and how does the war to defend Western Civilization begin? Does it start with tightly controlled borders and strict immigration criteria? Does it start with trade restrictions that keep our most important technologies away from “Non-Western” countries?
In those cases where we allow Non-Western people to migrate to our shores, to what extent do we require them to embrace our culture and renounce the ways of their former home?
What about the geographic areas where Western Civilizations border Non-Western countries? You know, places like Israel, Ukraine, South Korea and Taiwan. What level of force is acceptable for attempting to suppress Non-Western influences?
Lots of questions, I know. Many of us like to think of our species as one human family. I see us as much more tribal. The question is, “What do you value?”
Do you value the freedoms that Western cultures claim to provide? Do we actually still have those freedoms or have they been eroding for decades? If they’re fading away, why haven’t we done more to preserve them?
The questions are, how do you want to live, and what are you willing to do to keep the freedom to choose how you will live?
Thoughts…
